Winner: Kyler Murray
It’s no secret that the biggest thing that was frowned upon by Kyler Murray was his underwhelming small stature, and it seemed that most teams were not going to be able to get past that. Fortunately for Kyler Murray he measured in at 5’10, 207 pounds with 9 and a half inch hands, which would put him on the same size as Russell Wilson. I know a lot of coaches say nowadays size doesn’t matter, but him measuring in as the same size of a QB who has won the Super Bowl can only help him.
Loser: Jachai Polite
Jachai Polite lost the combine in a monsterous way. He was injured so he could not do any of the drills, and then it came out that he had a terrible interview periods with the teams. After he was told he had terrible interview with certain teams, he began to talk about the interview process, which is a big no-no in the eyes of the NFL. Some people have even reported that his injury was fake. A player who came into the combine with a 1st round draft grade, might have been taken off teams’ boards all together.
Winner: Defensive Lineman
It is no secret that as the NFL continues to go on the combine will produce more and more athletic type players, but I do not believe anyone saw this type of combine performances from Defensive Lineman. Montez Sweat, a 6’6 260 lb DE from Mississippi State University, ran a 4.41 forty, a record for defensive lineman. Dexter Lawrence put up 36 reps on the bench press. Rashan Gary had a 38 inch vertical jump. The defensive lineman were impressive at the combine, just because of their pure athleticism.
Loser: Marquise “Hollywood” Brown
Hollywood Brown, a WR out of Oklahoma, showed all season that he could take a top off the defense. A Big 12 defense, but still, a defense. Going into the combine everyone was excited to see what numbers the speedster would put up in the 40 yard dash, but unfortunately Hollywood suffered an injury in his foot that did not allow him to run. I do not believe this impacts him too much, but it definitely did not help.
Winner: DK Metcalf
It comes as no surprise to anyone that DK Metcalf is on this list. After the shirtless photo of him went viral many were wondering what would he look like at the combine, and he looked phenomenal at it. He ran a 4.33 40 yard dash, of which no receiver that ran a sub 4.4 was within 20 pounds of what DK weighed. He also put up 27 reps on the bench press, whereas only 14 of 44 defensive lineman did better than him. He also had a 40 inch vertical jump. These numbers took a fringe first rounder, and put him into the top 10 on some draft boards. A definite winner of the combine.
Loser: Josh Rosen?
I understand that Josh Rosen did not perform at the 2019 combine, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t lose. Due to the fact the Kyler Murray came in at the size he did it would seem that the Cardinals are more than likely going to draft him with the number 1 overall pick. You don’t need 2 franchise Qbs on your team, so it would seem that the 9th overall pick a year ago would be looking to suit up in a different uni next season.
