So, as if Knicks fans thought the season couldn't get any worse for their beloved Knicks, it did. The Knicks traded away their star player Kristap Porzingis, also known as the “Unicorn”. The trade consisted of the Mavericks sending Dennis Smith Jr, Wes Mathews and Deandre Jordan along with two 1st round picks for Kristap Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr, Courtney Lee, and Trey Burke from the Knicks.

First, what does this do for New York? Well, it helps them get rid of some cap space to go after big key free agents this summer in the likes of Kevin Durant, Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard, and Kyrie Irving to name a few. It also brings in a young talent like Dennis Smith Jr in hopes he develops into a star.

Now the biggest question is what this does for the Mavericks, specifically Luka Doncic. This may just be the move to make the Mavericks a contending team in the next 2-3 years, with having someone like Kristap next to Luka healthy. That is, IF, he comes back healthy and 100%. He can defend the rim just as well as anyone in the league, so there will be no lacking on the defensive end with him. The ability to spread the floor with him will be almost unmatched, and giving Luka the reigns of this team for the remainder of the season will further his development for next season which is a scary thing to think about. And not to mention Dallas is eyeing signing a big name in free agency. If they do this, look for this team to be fighting for a top playoff spot in a few years.
