Once a Tarheel, Always a Tarheel

As first reported by 247 sports this morning, Mack Brown will be the next head football coach at the University of North Carolina, a position in which he held from 1988 to 1997 before departing to be the head man at Texas where he won a National Championship in 2005 and accumulated an 158-48 record during his 15 year tenure.

This coaching search came to a halt very quickly in Chapel Hill being that Larry Fedora was relieved of his duties Sunday by athletic director Bubba Cunningham following a 2-9 campaign. Brown, 67, immediately became a hot candidate for the position having the ties that he has to the University. He has been employed by ESPN for the last 5 years but has been intrigued with the thought of returning to the college game and was thought to be in the running for the Arizona State job that eventually went to his former colleague, Herm Edwards.

With the new early signing period in effect, Brown’s immediate focus upon his hiring will be filling out a staff and recruiting which is something he was known for during his time at Texas. Kirk Bohls of the Austin American Statesman reported Brown could try to bring former Auburn head coach and current SEC Network employee, Gene Chizik with him as his defensive coordinator and recently fired Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury as the offensive coordinator. Just these two names create quite the buzz in the college football landscape and if he were to land both of them, the Tarheels will receive plenty of preseason hype going into the 2019 season.

In 2017, Brown told the Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, “I’ve got one more good run in me.” To me, there isn’t a better guy for the UNC job than Coach Brown, he will change the culture there and give Tarheel fans a reason to be excited as ever for the future of the football program in Chapel Hill.
