On Wednesday September 26th, Kelly Bryant officially announced his intentions to transfer from Clemson University following Head Coach Dabo Swinney’s decision to start true freshman Trevor Lawrence this Saturday vs. Syracuse. Originally a 3 star in the class of 2015, Bryant waited patiently behind Deshaun Watson for his turn and led the Tigers to a 12-2 record last year with a berth in the College Football Playoff. In comes 247 Sports’ number one player in the nation and by watching his first pass in the spring game which was a 50 yard bomb to Tee Higgins you could tell that this kid is going to be special and affect the offense in different ways than Bryant.
In a season where there are National Championships dreams and aspirations for the Tigers, I commend Swinney for making this decision. When it was announced that Bryant had missed his second straight practice, Swinney said in his press conference that “It was a bad day to be head coach and there hasn’t been a kid more committed to Clemson in his time there than Kelly Bryant. But at the end of the day, college football is a business, coaches are recruiting guys to replace their current players, it doesn’t matter if you are 26-2 as a starter or have won 16 games as a starter, the best player at the position in going to be the one taking snaps in crucial moments. Bryant called being demoted as starter a “Slap in the face” and you cant hardly blame him for thing that. Just a few weeks ago at Texas A&M, he led them to a big win in a hostile environment but thats how quick things can change and right now, Trevor Lawrence is a better quarterback, Lawrence has thrown for 9 touchdowns this year compared to Bryant’s two and he can just make some of the throws that Bryant can’t. We’re talking about a kid that I believe could be the number 1 pick in the NFL draft by the time he is eligible.
With the transfer of Bryant, this leaves Clemson incredibly thin at the quarterback position behind Lawrence with only Chase Brice there. Brice, a 4 star kid in his own right out of Grayson (Ga.) has only played sparingly in mop-up duties and spring games. Normally in their zone read scheme, there will be some designed quarterback runs but I don’t think those will be called anymore because they can’t afford a Lawrence injury. He is their ticket to the College Football Playoff and in my opinion their ceiling is higher with hm under center. The future is now for Clemson and if they weren’t already, they are now “ALL IN” on Trevor Lawrence.
